One of Colorado’s most cosmic sons, Aaron Dooley, is back with another new record that will simultaneously take you deep into space and move your soul.

RCU readers will no doubt recognize Dooley’s name from our coverage of his many solo releases and through his work with another favorite project of ours, Osmium House. For the uninitiated, he’s a daring composer and fearless sonic explorer whose main instrument is the bass. His work channels the freedom of kosmische musik and the versatility of improvised jazz fusion, all without being restricted by a particular genre label. He and his band stretch their wings and soar in these grey areas between styles, often developing entirely new sounds within their flight, which is done here in spades.

Available for preorder today on digital and cassette through Island House Recordings ahead of its October 6th release date, and on vinyl from Centripetal Force (which will ship in November), The International Disassociation of Aaron Dooley may just be the Denver-based artist’s most dynamic achievement yet.

With Aesop Adams on guitar, Gabriella Zelek on saxophone, Zuri Barnes on vocals and violin, Diego Lucero on drums, Gavin Susalski on trumpet and Cooper Dickerson handling pedal steel duties, the band blazes a totally unexplored path of sound. Elements of shadowy jazz, ambient country and celestial psychedelia are all combined into coasting soundscapes that roll and groove with a rural coolness that both Miles Davis and Buddy Emmons could have enjoyed. This is especially true on the spiritually euphoric “Funeral of Fireflies,” with its gossamer vocalizations and dueling waves of pedal steel and sax. Check it out:
