With their sweetly mellow 2022 debut album, Color Green proved themselves to be one of the top cosmic country acts around. Noah Kohll and Corey Madden blazed a highly unique path and wowed fans and critics alike by bringing a diverse range of influences from Hawkwind to JJ Cale into roots-based music. With this mind, it’s fascinating to hear Madden shifting gears and revealing even more sides to his musical DNA on his upcoming solo record.

To be released through Worried Songs on March 22, Taste The Hour is a more introspective and reserved album than his main group’s LP. With desert dust-encrusted rockers, loner folk dirges and even a little art pop, Madden lets his songs be guided by mood and atmosphere, which makes them feel more lived in and personal. This is certainly true for the record’s first single, “Free Again.”

Complete with a Syd Barrett-esque slashing guitar intro, desolate vocals and an overall arid ambience, this track is like a modern Moby Grape tune helmed by a less grungy Screaming Trees. An instant gem that would belong on any contemporary Nuggets comp.
