On their soon-to-be third LP, Brooklyn guitar and cello duo Quarterly weave together lyrical instrumentals that float serenely somewhere between the worlds of baroque chamber music and folk.
On Adonis, Kristen Drymala (cello) and Christopher DiPietro (guitar, percussion and tape loops/field recordings) developed compositions that are at once both intimate and cinematic. Their instruments frolic together, supporting and counterpointing each other to create evocative motifs and vivid, grandiose atmospheres. On songs like their latest single, the record’s title track, the married duo channel the stoic beauty of the sea and the joy and expectation of bringing a new life into this world through warm and luxuriant melodies. Check it out:
The song swells with so much tender emotion from the poetic interplay between the cello and fingerpicked guitar, it can stop you dead in your tracks and steal your complete attention.
Available through Ruination Record Co. on September 13th, Adonis is a moving and marveling listen that fans of Glenn Jones, Colleen and Robert Kirby’s orchestrations for Nick Drake would surely become obsessed with. Click here to preorder your copy today.
