Released at the end of September on Island House Recordings, Zonk’s self-titled LP is a total monster of a guitar and drum duo record.

Across five pieces, drummer Robin Chestnutt propels you through the cosmos of Paul Dehaven’s soaring distorted guitar. The pair plays hard improv rock in a minimalist avant-garde jazz format, with possible influences that range as far as experimental psychedelia to Tuareg guitar music and even Ron Asheton’s proto-punk scuzz.

Neither instrument seems to ever take center stage completely, instead, they both act together as a single unit, complimenting each other’s playing perfectly to create a single wild atmosphere. A complete sound. While DeHaven’s aggressive guitar builds and crashes like a great tsunami of fuzz, Chestnutt’s drums cascade and detonate over his roaring maelstrom of mutated leads and riffs.

If you could imagine a slimmed-down Oneida channeling Mitch Mitchell and Sonny Sharrock, then you might get this set of absolutely feral guitar tones, rapid fire drum fills and pure fearlessness. Check it out.
