Sharing songs between two music lovers is one of the greatest bonding forces there is. Music moves and communicates beyond what mere words can say on their own, and it carries pearls of memories that can be revisited every time you put the needle back on the vinyl or whenever you pick up the guitar. This sense of a shared love and bittersweet nostalgia is embedded into every second of Brigid Mae Power’s moving tribute to her late father, Songs for You.
This personally curated collection of cover songs positively glows with affection for both the music and Power’s particular connection to it. Her gossamer-like vocals are so rich with feeling, it sounds as though she’s singing straight from the depths of her heart, and right into the listener’s. There’s so much respect for the source material on this record, but Power still makes each song her own, showing that she knows these songs so well, they’re practically embedded within her very DNA.
Armed with just some reverb, an acoustic and electric guitar, organ, and accordion, with the occasional assistance of Ryan Jewell on drums and Shahzad Ismaily on bass, Power developed a dreamy, yet minimalist sound. This reserved set-up makes songs like Neil Young’s “Mellow My Mind,” Television’s “See No Evil” and Bert Jansch’s “Fresh as a Sweet Sunday Morning” speak for themselves and as relatable as ever.
There’s so much comfort and care in these beautifully crafted renditions. This is an album you’ll want to keep close to you, and seek out in times of need or when you yourself want to share music with those that you love. Memories creating memories. The bonding power of music lives on.
