One of the biggest honors I’ve experienced through RCU, was when Tom Herman JR, a New Jersey DIY neopsychedelia artist, of whom currently goes by the name Chitinous Mandible, presented the song “Age of Creation” to me, and explained that it was inspired by attending our last backyard garden show.

He had told me that the lyrics of this new song grew from the idea of how new musical and artistic renaissances could start as seeds in the humble grassroots origins of houses, backyards, or garages. If the creative spirit of our little community that congregated on our lawn, despite the oppressive July heat, could influence such an idea and a beautiful track like this is, then we must be doing something right. I couldn’t think of a greater compliment.

Herman filmed a fittingly surrealistic music video for the song, largely around the sculptures of Danish artist, Thomas Dambo, in Hainesport, NJ, from his series “Way of the Bird King.” Dambo’s art gets across a message for sustainability, which echoes Herman’s belief in how creativity can forge new directions, new movements and even more art that can bring a community together. We need to remember this now more than ever, as political leaders try to create more division among the masses, robbing them of the tremendous power they could harness while united.

“I think we can utilize art and expression as transformative tools which can lead to a more sustainable future,” Herman said in regards to the meaning behind his new video. This intent grounds the dreamlike visuals Herman filmed into something concrete and universal, which can stand the test of time. Give it.a watch:
