Listening to SOMA’s latest album is a beautifully transcendental experience. With joyous chants, cyclical hypnotic rhythms tapped out on hand drums and meditative drones, this is a record that can lift your spirit and bring a warm light into your day.
Recorded in the historic Trinity Episcopal Church in Asbury Park, New Jersey, Your Soul is the Holy Sound is perhaps the most chant-heavy of SOMA’s releases so far. However, at times, it’s also the most psychedelic, with tracks like the spacy “The Tarot Will Teach You” and “Feather of Ma’at” feeling as cosmic and arcanely mystical as the stunning cover art.
Speaking of that lovely cover art, it was designed by visionary artist David V D’Andrea, who made each of the 500 records pressed with manual screenprint and letterpress in his studio in Olympia, Washington. So this album is not only a treat for your ears, it’s a delicacy for your eyes, too.
For fans of devotional Indian music, the works of Popol Vuh and Jodorowsky, this is a record to drift away into.
