J.M. Hart’s upcoming record, Turned Around, finds the Virginia-based folk rocker’s pastoral country-tinged sound bloom even further into a multifaceted melange of down-home psychedelia and earthy Americana music.

by Liam Grant

It’s been a treat to hear Hart’s musical evolution from solo back porch acoustic outings to complex studio creations with a roster of great backup players. The sound on this record is certainly the most densely packed and eclectic of his discography so far, with jangly astral guitars, shimmering mandolin, atmospheric keys and powerhouse drums (provided by none other than Ryan Jewell) stacked under Hart’s warm and inviting vocals. Some songs lean more into dreamy cosmic country territories, while others, like the record’s first single, “Give Me Love,” dazzle with imaginative arrangements and lush, technicolor instrumentation and effects. Check it out:

When Hart sings “let’s share the world and have ourselves a time” in this opening track, he sets the communal, loving tone right at the beginning of the album, making you feel welcomed into his cozy sonic world. With friends and likeminded long-distance musical brethren, Mike Horn (Seawind of Battery) and Mike Gorman (The City of Light) joining in on the fun, this is a record that just glows with synergy and a desire to be together. We need more albums with this atmosphere right now.
