This power trio that is Mike Fuchs (drums), Chaz Prymek (guitar) and Nic Rose (keys) took a more minimalist approach to skronky, meandering avant-garde jazz for this release, and the results are deeply atmospheric and instantly hypnotic.
Each track on this record is a hovering soundscape built largely on Fuchs’ storm surge drums, of which essentially act as the lead instrument, with Prymek’s guitar skittering over the surface while Rose’s Mike Ratledge-esque growling keyboard joining the frey.
The jams sound like a more slimmed-down version of Miles Davis’ electric band (sans Davis) and early 70s Soft Machine trying to score a Stan Brakhage film. The guitar and keys often blip and stutter in wonky melody fragments while chasing each other through the crashing cymbal haze, producing a sound that is like a live Stockhausen-styled tape cut-up of a much lengthier jam session. Despite being such a small group, they’re able to make one hell of a loud noise, of which I think is most evident on the epic concluding live track, “Leaving The Turtle’s Navel.” With the right speakers or headphones on, this eruptive piece will absolutely send you flying backwards Marty McFly-style by the mid-way point.
