On their new single for Centripetal Force Records, The Jack Silverman Quartet injects some sly funk into their mysterious noir-rock sound.

Taken from the upcoming record of the same name,”Prince of Shadows” finds the Nashville-based group utilizing more wah-wah, slashing guitar lines and growling bass than on Silverman’s previous efforts. The slinking, jazzy ambience Silverman is known for now swings with a bold, smoky strut, and plenty of psychedelic weirdness that bubbles just under the surface, keeping the music feeling dazed and dreamlike. If his previous releases were like scores for unmade noir films, then this album is like the soundtrack to the most Day-Glo David Lynch thriller you could imagine.

Silverman, of whom you may know from the Nashville Ambient Ensemble, is joined by Robert Crawford on drums, Brook Sutton on bass and Matt Glassmeyer on sax and Wurlitzer (among other instruments). The group seems to have no trouble at all with locking into a deep, atmospheric groove, and improvise around it with plenty attention going towards texture, dissonance and mood. This is especially true on the title track. Just listen for yourself:

You can preorder Prince of Shadows on vinyl (in a limited 200-copy edition) and digitally today ahead of its March 1st release. Click here to secure your copy now.

Some pieces from the album, including the title cut, will be featured on the soundtrack to Mindtraveler, a documentary slated for release later in the year. So do keep an eye out for that as well!
