Texas-based singer-songwriter, Jerry David DeCicca, has returned in top form with the breezy progressive-country of “Long Distance Runner,” from his upcoming LP, Cardiac Country, due out April 25th.
DeCicca’s 6th full-length solo record touches on several existential themes, which only feel more poignant when you realize that the album captured the artist unknowingly on the brink of a diagnosis that would eventually lead to open heart surgery. From dealing with mortality, loss and going through the motions of aging, DeCicca sounds weary, yet hopeful, especially on the first released track, “Long Distance Runner.”
With gliding waves of pedal steel, provided by the great BJ Cole (of whom you’ve heard on records by John Cale, Scott Walker, Kevin Ayers, etc), and a smooth, flowing rhythm, this track is rich with the magic of the morning that passes by and through the athletic subject of the song. Lyrically, the track is encouraging for the listener and the singer to keep going forward, do what’s best for you and trudge ahead through life and its many obstacles.
The sun is behind you
Your knees worn like thread
But your heart remains healthy for what lies ahead
With excellent songwriting, earthy yet pastoral arrangements and the absolute best crew of musicians for the job, Cardiac Country will certainly be a major highlight in the alt-country/cosmic Americana canon. Click here to preorder it from Sophomore Lounge today.
