A part of Hausu Mountain’s, impressive HausLive series, Volume 4 finds the always incendiary Bill Orcutt Guitar Quartet in extra top form, ripping and thundering like a colossal, but gracefully charging beast.
It must be first started that this quartet is without a doubt a neat little collection of some of today’s premiere guitar gods: Wendy Eisenberg, Ava Mendoza, Bill Orcutt and Shane Parish. Each one of them a titan of talent and a highly unique artist in their own right, and together, they make one breathtaking, very loud group.
Recorded by ragenap himself, Joel Berk, this tape sparks with raw fuzz that is channeled into tight, avant-garde jazz structures. Yet, you can’t help but feel this immense tension from all of the guitars, like as though they just might bust free from each piece into flailing feedback chaos at any second. The control and focus present here, along with the free-minded virtuosity of the well-seasoned improvisers, leads to some fiery interplay. When any of these highly skilled axe-slingers get a chance to break off into a solo, your ears are treated to guitar lines that could get wild, but always feel perfectly tempered for the tone, texture and atmosphere of the song. Like the essence of the song itself is branching off like a bolt of forked lightning,
If you’re a guitar obsessive or a fan of wonky, modal jazz and avant-garde composition, this is a must have tape that you need to study well.
