Buck Curran’s latest LP is a total love letter to the magic and soul that can be found in the resonating and harmonic qualities of acoustic steel-stringed guitars.
Recorded in Italy over the last year, Far Driven Sun finds Curran utilizing and emphasizing the tonal subtleties and sustaining aspects of his beloved ‘Butterfly’ Model 1 Acoustic Guitar (custom built by Stefan Sobell in 1990) to create labyrinthine fingerstyle compositions and improvised soundscapes. The guitar is easily the star of the show, as Curran makes the instrument sing, moan and shimmer with dexterous fingerpicking, bluesy brass slide work and more.
Curran’s absolute mastery of his craft is incredibly evident all throughout this record. Every track appears to be lead by mood, atmosphere and tone, as he uses the long droning reverberations of his own instrument as an emotional backdrop to weave intricate lattice-like leads over. While playing mostly solo and with overdubs, Curran is joined by Nataly Kozlova on bass for a couple of songs, and on “ILiad (Slight Return),” Curran’s sound is further bolstered by the drums of Francesco Di Lenge. This rhythm section adds a mystical ritualistic quality to the song, of which brings to mind classic Pentangle in their prime.
Meditative, intimate and always impressive, Far Driven Sun is a must-have for every guitar soli fan. Click here to get your copy from Obsolete Recordings and Echodelick Records today.
