The Far Sound has returned with a new record of dramatic and dreamy ambient country soundscapes and daring improvisation.
The Far Sound is the solo project of Portland, Oregon-based multi-instrumentalist Rick Pedrosa, of whom you may know from his pedal steel guitar work with Abronia, Federale, and Jeffrey Silverstein. On this record, he utilizes a whole herd of Americana instruments to weave together a thick, spooky atmosphere that feels at once both rustic and mystical. Throughout the album, stark banjo and acoustic guitar ring out coldly with deep, cavernous reverb, creating a foreboding atmosphere. This slightly tense ambiance perfectly sets the stage for Pedrosa to head into stoic, and even cinematic zones, with haunted house electric organs, whining, twisting pedal steel and thumping, primal beats. This is the music of a western landscape full of wildfires, bitter ghosts and hallucinogenic cacti, which somehow feels perfectly in tune with the moods, weirdness and tone of West Coast American life in 2025.
Yet, despite that heaviness you might feel throughout a lot of the record, on the album’s first single, “Let Warmth Turn Inward,” Pedrosa steers into a more hopeful sound. With fierce David Gilmour-like slide steel solos, ritualistic drums and rolling banjo melodies, the track sounds like it would be the score to a scene in a cowboy movie when the hero is riding off to fearlessly face the enemy. There is something tough, yet optimistic about this instrumental piece, and may it help boost your own confidence to brave this ever troubling world. Check it out below:
