Arriving like a shadowy omen, Stony Sugarskull have returned with a new single, Butterflies/You Rock.
If you’ve been a reader of RCU for a while now, then you probably already know how Stony Sugarskull is a total favorite of the blog. Luckily, their smoky, mysterious goth-psychedelia that made them such a favorite is still heavily present here.
The first track, “Butterflies,” is a slow burning, ethereal ballad that is gorgeously saturated in damp reverb. The slow chugging, almost-bluesy song aches with a surreal gloom that haunts the listener like a ghostly acid-flashback. The dark mood, swaying rhythm and eerie effects of this track all help to create a great tension that is only resolved by the hypnotic mellowness of the following song, “You Rock.”
“You Rock” swirls and meanders like cigarette ash caught in an updraft. Spellbinding and endlessly dreamy, this track easily lulls any listener into a trance-like state with its cold guitars and phantasmal vocals. This is the kind of song that if listened to while lying down in a dark room, one could easily feel like they are starting to float away.
