All kosmische musik fans need to hear the first single by Neu! and Harmonia’s Michael Rother and Tim Story, from Moebius Strips, an upcoming tribute to electronic music pioneer, Dieter Moebius.
Moebius Strips is a “multichannel audio installation” piece curated by Story in homage to the legendary Moebius, who helped to change the face of German music while working in bands like Harmonia and Cluster and artists like Brian Eno and Conny Plank. This track, “Strip 30,” was pieced together and sculpted by Moebius’ friend and former bandmate, Michael Rother, out of samples of and sounds inspired by archival Moebius recordings.
The track bubbles, sways and shuffles like a malfunctioning droid communicating with an off-kilter and overloaded washing machine. A mellow driving groove chugs throughout the song at a trotting pace while patterns of electronic beeps and chirps skate over flute-like synth melodies and waves of backwards guitar. The tone, feeling and texture of this sound collage all fit right in with the Harmonia and Cluster records of old.
A second single has since been released, “Strip 31” by Eve Maret, which is also an astounding listen and beautiful tribute to Moebius. The full digital album will see its release on October 1st and the installation piece will debut at the Witching Hour Fest on November 5th-7th. The complete work will feature contributions from the likes of Jean-Benoît Dunckel (Air), Geoff Barrow (Portishead), Sarah Davachi, Mark Mothersbaugh (Devo), Hans-Joachim Roedelius (Cluster, Harmonia) and Yuri Suzuki, among others.
