Mercy Weiss – Brand New Key

Mercy Weiss, a recent Los Angeles dwelling singer-songwriter, usually constructs smoky, yet slightly-electro folk pop tracks. However, here she breathes new, sultry life into Melanie Safka’s 1971 hit single, “Brand New Key.”

Weiss, along with Christopher Pellnat, from The Warp/The Weft, steer the novelty song into a near reggae territory with a minimalist organ and vibraphone backing. Yet what totally makes this cover is Weiss’ seductive and smooth-as-silk vocals, which pulls you in like an intimate whisper, and coils around you like a swirling lullaby.

Check it out below and be sure to check out the rest of Weiss’ discography here.
